Skype for iOS has reached version 4, which finally sees video calls added to the service. This incredibly popular app now lets iPhone and iPad users make video calls over WiFi and 3G networks.
Skype has always had a great interface on the iPhone, and that is still true. The big usability change is that you can now use all its features wherever you have 3G. Chat, call or video chat any of your skype contacts, whatever platform they are on. This cross-compatibilty and 3G puts Skype ahead of Apple's own FaceTime in terms of usability.
The quality of video isn't up to FaceTime standards though: Images are pretty grainy, even over WiFi. However, test calls we made over 3G were perfectly stable, and while the video wasn't great, the audio was fine and it's pretty amazing to make free video calls over 3G.
Adding and managing contacts on Skype is much easier than with FaceTime, and the only big features missing from the desktop application are group video and emoticon support. Buying Skype credits allows you to make cheap phone calls to people all over the world, and your chat and call history is all saved automatically. Skype is still the excellent communication app it's always been, but adding 3G audio and video calls really makes it something special. This is an absolutely essential app for iOS

You can save a lot of time and phone minutes if you use Skype instead of the phone. For those who have an iPod Touch you will need earphones with a mic built into them as well as wifi around you. Using this to talk to people will save you a lot of money in the long run even though with Skype you will always have to deal with drop conversations and the moments where you and the other person can't hear each other. The dropped convos and not being able to hear the other user are the main problems for Skype users. The only other issue is for it to be completely free, it has to be Skype to Skype calling meaning the other person must be using Skype too. If you wish to call landlines or cellphone, you will have to pay a fee which is still usually cheaper than your current service provider's plan. I would recommend any form of Skype if you prefer talking over typing. The mobile version is a plus because you can use it more like a phone rather than talk on a mic using your computer.
